From tragedy to innovation

The story behind the SafeSleep® breathe-through crib mattress

Our Story

After being affected by the unthinkable when a loved one rolled over in the middle of the night, We found ourselves needing to find answers.  How do things like this happen to ordinary people?

This began our journey to create the safest and best mattress!

Who we are

Julie Andreae

In 2008, I began collaborating with my sister, a leading AAP pediatrician on the design of a crib mattress that would contain no fiber fill or other materials that could cause suffocation, trap hazardous carbon dioxide or pathogens.  A crib mattress that also addressed lesser know safety concerns related to conventionally designed baby mattresses including the use of sheets, use of fire retardants and other harsh chemicals, liquids pooling on the surface, and positional pressure.

The SafeSleep® breathe-through crib mattress design was launched in 2010.  In 2013, we were awarded a utility patent for the first completely breathe-through crib mattress design.  In 2016, we were  recognized as the safest and best baby mattress by leading AAP physicians and policy makers.  By 2017, over 80,000 SafeSleep® breathe-through crib mattresses were sold.

Today, my knowledge of SIDS and safe infant sleep has earned me the recognition as a “SIDS Content Expert.”  My expertise has been sought to review sleep surfaces involved in infant sleep-related death cases.

Dr. Margie Andreae

I know firsthand the devastation of losing a relative to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) which fostered my interest in pediatrics and the development of sleep products that reduce infant sleep-related deaths.

I am a pediatrician with over 30 years of experience in the field of child wellness and safety.

I am a recipient of the regional and national awards for clinical and academic excellence. I have served on several national committees and authored many peer-reviewed publications to advance the health of children. I am a fellow of the national American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and member of my local Safe Sleep Task Force.

As an expert on infant sleep surfaces, I worked with members of the AAP’s Safe Sleep Task Force to include information on the benefits of air-permeable (breathe-through) infant sleep surfaces in their 2016 technical report on SIDS and Other Sleep-Related Infant Deaths. This report provides the evidence used to support the AAP’s “Recommendations for a Safe Infant Sleeping Environment” used by all safe sleep advocates.  (Two Michigan women influence change to AAP Safe Sleep guidelines.)

We are committed to
Infants should be safe no matter what position they end up in while sleeping since we have no way to keep them from rolling.  Not all infant deaths are preventable, but many are.  At Safe Sleep Technologies, we are determined to make a difference!
