FAQ’s About the SafeSleep® Crib Mattress

FAQ ‘s

The SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattress is innovatively designed to be the safest crib mattress available. It was designed by a leading Pediatrician and SIDS/SafeSleep expert to address all the safety, health, and sanitary issues associated with foam, innerspring, latex, breathable, organic and hybrid crib mattresses. The SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattress is completely breathe-through. It consists of an open-cell fabric surface suspended over a solid wood frame with openings on the sides allowing constant air circulation. The base is made from solid poplar. The SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattress comes with your choice of six different topper colors. Additional toppers may be purchased separately.
These revolutionary crib mattresses allow your baby to breathe freely through the open-celled topper even if they are face straight down. The side openings allow air to constantly circulate protecting your baby from harmful carbon dioxide accumulation. The 3D open-celled topper helps keep an infants core temperature stable. Not too hot, and not too cold, resulting in a longer, safer, more comfortable sleep for your baby. The crib mattress topper can be easily removed for machine washing and drying, providing a more sanitary sleeping environment for your baby. There is no inner core, so no messy or cumbersome bathtub washing. The base is easily wiped clean while still in the crib.
"Breathable" mattresses indicate some level of air-flow. Currently, there are no formal regulations on what level and rate of air-flow there must be to be considered "Breathable." Many crib mattresses that claim to be "Breathable" have quilted layers and center cores that promote air-flow, but these products also trap carbon dioxide at higher rates than standard crib mattresses. A "Completely Breathe-Through" crib mattress has no quilting or core so it does not trap harmful carbon dioxide. The SafeSleep®has been tested to show 100% oxygen rich air while breathing through it.
Yes. The SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattresses has the same amount of deflection as a standard firm crib mattress. The SafeSleep® crib mattress is the only U.S. crib mattress to pass the Australia/New Zealand standard for firmness.
Yes. The toppers is made from a 3D medical-grade spacer fabric. The middle layer of the spacer fabric forms a “micro-climate” which allows heat and vapor to dissipate next to the body; however, the heat is channeled into the middle layer, keeping the baby warm, while maintaining a stable body core temperature for a better, longer, safer night’s sleep.
No. The SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattress contains no harmful chemicals such as phthalates, antimony and various biocides found in conventional and organic crib mattresses. There are also no nano-coatings or silica to make them waterproof, and no chemicals to make them flame retardant. There is no reason to make these breathe-through mattresses waterproof since they contain no fiberfill that can become contaminated. They are naturally flame retardant by design.
Yes. The welting is made from a tissue fiber that allows for consistent air-flow. We also designed it to be round, so a baby will not be able to have face compression on the welting. It is also attached to the surface to prevent the risk of strangulation or wedging.
Yes, if you want a spare topper we sell them as separates. We have six colors to choose from. You can also purchase a new topper when the next baby arrives to make your SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattress just like new.
The revolutionary 3D fabric of the topper dries super quick. The 3D fabric of the topper dries in minutes even if submerged in water. You can simply wipe the leakage up with a wet cloth and let dry by air for a few minutes. You can also remove the topper from the base and rinse the topper under warm water and let air dry for five minutes. You can also purchase an additional topper for late night changes.
No. The topper will remain taut and firm provided you wash the topper every couple of weeks. Use a medium heat setting.
Your mattress will last a lifetime with proper care.
Simply add a ½ cup of bleach in the washing machine prior to placing the topper in for washing. Let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes and complete the wash cycle.
The SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattress has been tested to hold up to 80 lbs. Your child will become too tall for the mattress before they become too heavy for it. And yes, it is perfectly safe for your child to jump on it. We are parents of boys 🙂
The SafeSleep® Completely Breathe-Through Crib Mattress fits in any standard size crib or toddler bed. All U.S. crib mattresses and cribs must conform to size standards set by the CPSC to be considered a "standard" size.
There is a polypropylene plastic bottom 5 inches below the topper. This surface is easily wiped cleaned and disinfected with mild soap and a cloth. This area is very easily accessible by simply lifting the bars the topper is around. There is no core, so no need to ever have to remove the mattress until its time to adjust the height settings on your crib.
No. The plastic bottom is made from a polypropylene #5 which is the same plastic used for children’s toothbrushes.
The SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattress topper has an integrated welting designed to prevent your baby’s extremities from entanglement in the crib slats. We do not recommend using any type of crib bumper since all crib bumpers, even the breathable ones, can pose a strangulation risk if your baby gets wedged under the bumper.
You will have to check with your insurance provider. Most insurances require a prescription issued from a qualified physician.
No. The SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattress is designed to allow your baby to sleep directly on the comfy topper. No crib sheet or mattress pad is needed. Mattress pads can artificially elevate a baby’s body temperature and can cause overheating. They also pose a positional asphyxiation risk, and they can pose a strangulation and suffocation risk if they become loose.
Yes. The crib skirt can be placed under the mattress and above the crib mattress platform just like with a conventional crib mattress.
The topper is easily removed by unsnapping the white tabs from the base and then lifting the sidebars on the crib mattress, unzipping the surface and pulling it up and off the frame. The topper is easily replaced by fitting the surface over the bars when in the upright position, zipping the surface closed on the underside and then gently pushing the bar farthest away from you down into the lock support and then snapping the white tab to the side of the base. While holding the secured bar down, repeat the process with the bar closest to you.
If you find your topper is too tight, simply unzip the underside of the topper from 1/4 to 1/3 of the way open to reduce some of the tension. Unzipping the topper this slight amount will not affect the safety or comfort of your baby.
The welting along the outside edge will not allow the bars to spring open with force. Make sure that the back bar is securely locked in place and the tab is snapped down before trying to lock the front bar. Hold the back bar down while pushing the front bar in place.
The topper can be washed as often as required using a standard washer and dryer. It is recommended that you wash the topper separately and use a mild detergent safe for baby’s delicate skin. You can also use bleach to remove stains. Bleach is not recommended for every wash. Drying the topper on medium heat will kill pathogens. Do not use dryer sheets if your baby has sensitive skin.
No. The area beneath the crib mattress topper is intended to allow constant passive air flow and should not be obstructed with blankets or other stored items.
Yes. The sensor pad fits between the two fabric layers of the topper. Simply place it between the netting underside and the spacer fabric topper.

No. Crib bumpers are dangerous and even banned for sale in some states and counties. Crib bumpers, like stuffed animals, pillows and blankets, are a suffocation risk. You never want to create a gap that the baby can wedge into where air flow is restrained. The integrated welting around the base of the SafeSleep® design isn’t a bumper. The same 3D fabric that makes up our safe sleep surface continues directly up from the surface (without any gap or ability for baby to get wedged between the sleep surface and edge) to wrap around a material that contains no foam or fiberfill, specifically chosen for its lack of chemical off-gassing. We also designed the welting to be round, so a baby will not be able to have face compression on i. Our founders designed each element of the design, including the welting, to prevent suffocation hazards, chemical inhalation and CO2 rebreathing.
