FAQ’s About the SafeSleep® Crib Mattress
FAQ ‘s
The SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattress is innovatively designed to be the safest crib mattress available. It was designed by a leading Pediatrician and SIDS/SafeSleep expert to address all the safety, health, and sanitary issues associated with foam, innerspring, latex, breathable, organic and hybrid crib mattresses. The SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattress is completely breathe-through. It consists of a 3D mesh fabric surface suspended over a solid wood frame. The wood frame has decorative openings on the sides. These openings allow constant, uninterrupted air circulation. The base is made from solid poplar. The SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattress comes with your choice of six different topper colors. Additional toppers may be purchased separately.
The innovative design of the SafeSleep® allows your baby to breathe freely through the open-celled topper even if they are face straight down. The side openings allow air to constantly circulate protecting your baby from harmful carbon dioxide accumulation. The 3D open-celled topper helps keep an infants core temperature stable. Not too hot, and not too cold, resulting in a longer, safer, more comfortable sleep for your baby. The crib mattress topper can be easily removed for machine washing and drying, providing a more sanitary sleeping environment for your baby. There is no inner core, so there is no bathtub, shower, or hose needed to wash the SafeSleep®. The base is easily wiped clean while still in the crib. It takes seconds to dry - not hours!
"Breathable" mattresses indicate some level of air-flow. Currently, there are no formal regulations on what level and rate of air-flow there must be to be considered "Breathable." Many crib mattresses that claim to be "Breathable" have surfaces made up of multiple layers of 3D mesh quilted together along with a porus center core. Some even add a viscose (rayon) waterproof cover. Viscose is made from both synthetic and natural fibers. These additional layers may impede airflow.
The SafeSleep has no fill or core and it has open sides to facilitate passive airflow. The surface is a single-layer, 3D mesh. This design makes the SafeSleep® "Completely Breathe-Through." There is nothing to impede airflow.
The SafeSleep® has been tested to show 100% oxygen rich air while breathing through it. It is designed to eliminate harmful CO2 - a risk factor associated with SIDS. Testing proves harmful CO2 is gone from the SafeSleep® in less than 1/2 a second. A baby takes a breath every 1 to 2 seconds. CO2 is gone from the SafeSleep® before your baby takes their next breath of air.
Yes. The SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattresses has the same amount of deflection as a standard firm crib mattress. The SafeSleep® crib mattress is the only U.S. crib mattress to pass the Australia/New Zealand standard for firmness.
Yes. The toppers is made from a 3D medical-grade spacer fabric. The middle layer of the spacer fabric forms a “micro-climate” which allows heat and vapor to dissipate next to the body; however, the heat is channeled into the middle layer, keeping the baby warm, while maintaining a stable body core temperature for a better, longer, safer night’s sleep.
No. The SafeSleep® Breathe-Through Crib Mattress contains no harmful chemicals such as phthalates, antimony and various biocides found in conventional and organic crib mattresses. There are also no nano-coatings, silica, or viscose to make them waterproof. There are also no and no flame retardants. There is no reason to make the breathe-through mattress waterproof since it does not contain any fiberfill or core that can become contaminated. They are naturally flame retardant by design.
Our products are OEKO-TEX® certified, ensuring there are no harmful chemicals.

The topper is easily removed by unsnapping the white tabs from the base and then lifting the sidebars on the crib mattress, unzipping the surface and pulling it up and off the frame. The topper is easily replaced by placing the surface over the bars when in the upright position, zipping the surface closed on the underside and then gently pushing the bar farthest away from you down into the lock support and then snapping the white tab to the side of the base. While holding the secured bar down, repeat the process with the bar closest to you.
If you find your topper is too tight, simply unzip the underside of the topper from 1/4 to 1/3 of the way open to reduce some of the tension. Unzipping the topper this slight amount will not affect the safety.
Once in the crib, the welting along the outside edge will not allow the bars to spring open with force. The bars are spring loaded to prevent them from forcefully dropping down.
When locking the bars in place, make sure that the back bar is securely locked in place and the tab is snapped down before trying to lock the front bar. Hold the back bar down while pushing the front bar in place.
The locks are also adjutable. Simply pinch them together to tighten. Once the bars are both down, they shift inward and hold in place.
The topper can be washed as often as required using a standard washer and dryer. It is recommended that you wash the topper separately and use a mild detergent safe for baby’s delicate skin. You can also use bleach to remove stains. Bleach is not recommended for every wash. Drying the topper on medium heat will kill pathogens. Do not use dryer sheets if your baby has sensitive skin.
