- Keep all loose items including blankets, pillow, and sheets out of the crib – no wedges should be used.
- Use a firm crib mattress – preferably one that meets International firmness standards.
- Place your baby to sleep alone, on their back, in a crib on an air permeable/breathe-through crib mattress should they roll over unattended.
- Give your infant a pacifier for sleeping.
- Avoid overheating your baby – air permeable/breathe-through crib mattresses are preferred.
- Breastfeed your baby.
- Don’t smoke or expose your infant to second-hand smoke.
- Don’t use illicit drugs or drink alcohol while pregnant or while caring for an infant.
- Avoid devices that claim they prevent SIDS.
- Immunize your baby following the AAP’s recommended schedule.
- Provide tummy time for your infant. Breathe-through crib mattresses provide a safe option for tummy time.
